Gert eller Gerhard ble født på gården Skotnes i Buksnes den 2.eller 3.mai 1722 (Korsmesse om våren). Han var den 5. i rekken av 7 barn av foreldrene landhandler Andreas Schøning og Marthe Ursin (datter av prest Michael Bjørnsen eller Ursin. Han reiste tidlig til Trondheim for å gå på skole der, ble  historiker og reiselivsforfatter, men han ble senere utnevnt av Kongen i København til kongens arkivar.

Schøning er en av de største personligheter fra øya vår og også i landet vårt på den tiden, men glemt av historien. Frode Wigum kjenner godt til hans historie, og har selv gått på den skolen som ble oppkalt etter han i Trondheim.
